‘Closing of the Bones’ Healing Ceremony

Next Closing of the Bones Ceremony: TBA (in the fall) at Alma Education and Movement Center in Portland, Oregon

Flowering Into Motherhood: A Closing of the Bones is a postpartum healing ceremony, which was created to nurture the mother after her passage through giving birth, into the flowering of motherhood and beyond.  It is a celebration, a setting of sacred space, and a way to bring families together, to provide support through this very special time.

What is the origin of ‘Closing of the Bones’?

Flowering Into Motherhood is inspired by a ‘Closing of the Bones’  Mexican ceremony where the postpartum mother is anointed, massaged and wrapped in the Mayan tradition. There is a calling of her spirit back home as she has been a portal for carrying new life, and has walked the threshold between worlds. A transformation has also begun as the mother embraces new aspects of herself through this rite of passage into new stages of motherhood. Our intention is to provide a space as a nurturing and supportive environment in which healing can take place on these many levels.

What types of healing modalities are used?

The ceremony begins in welcoming the mother and family. There will be a short introduction and an offering towards creating personal intention. In the tradition of ‘mother roasting’, the mother will be offered an internal steam bath with flowers and herbs to bring heat or “chi” back into her body. She is kept warm and then escorted to her bed where she will be nurtured by healing hands. A variety of healing modalities may be used involving massage, cranial sacral therapy, shiatsu, aromatherapy, and sound healing. There will be a ‘closing’ done by gently wrapping the cranium, the midsection and the pelvic area, helping to guide the bones back to their original positioning.

Friends:

Please bring your partner or friend to support you in your process. Babies are welcome and celebrated as a part of the ceremony up to the discretion of the mother. If bringing the little one, the support person should be prepared to take the baby out of the room, perhaps on a walk during the healing portion of the ceremony.

The Closing of the Bones Ceremony is designed for mothers from 6 weeks postpartum and beyond. The ceremony  is open to all mothers at any time who wish to find some closure for themselves and wish to take part.

Raves and reviews for Closing of the Bones:

“I felt so embraced and cared for as a mother.  This experience really opened a space in me to LOVE being a mother.  That is what I have been seeking for quite sometime.  This experience brought me back into myself and I have noticed in me more strength to embrace Life, even in these days when the light is shorter.  So thank you again!  Thank you for having this idea and bringing it forth and believing in it and for so genuinely caring for me.  It was one of the most beautiful gifts I have received in motherhood.”

Annie, mama

*l feel like the Closing of the Bones ceremony offered me an opportunity to process my birthing experience in a way l hadn’t been able to before. It was so healing to have a beautiful, sacred space in which to offer thanks to my body and the spirits who helped me through my journey. After the ceremony was complete, l felt more grounded and whole. Energy was no longer leaking out of me and l felt very strong and recharged.*

Dana, mama

“Thank you again so much for such an amazing, powerful experience. I shed tears that I didn’t know I had in me and felt a sense of empowerment after the ceremony was over. I also experienced a new kind of healing through the ceremony’s various body/mind work, and it was as if my spirit awakened. Thank you!”

Kimberly
